New album – Royce da 5’9" "Street Hop" album review

Posted: November 25, 2009 in Uncategorized

Royce is one of those artist that the majority of music listeners could not attribute a track to without out prompting. However for a Hip-Hop fan the minute you hear Royce check the mic you know you are in for witty flow with a grimy undertone mixed with the occasional excited but un-hurried delivery.
Street Hop isĀ  the latest offer coming on the heals of the Bar exam series and Slaughterhouse features. Production runs the gambit from a basement upstart sound to polished, sample sprinkled tracks. This diversity makes for a good mix that paces the album well but keeps you off guard.
Some stand out tracks include:
“Soldier” which has a dope beat and delivery but an ill fitting hook that takes a bit of the pucnh out of the flow,”Dinner Time” has a track that gets road harder than the Lodge in in the summer after 2:30 AM.
“Warriors” and “Murder” are stand out tracks and hopefully can be serviced to DJ’s as the B-side to the radio and club friendly “New Money” which lands right in the middle of the album and allows the listener to trade in their scowl for a quick head nod generated from the party record vibe.
All in all I’d say spend your money and cop the album you will not be disappointed.
On a personal note I hope the album does well Royce is a vet in the game and success would not only be earned but well deserved. – Buie
